BLD’s exclusive wheelchair Leash Hook Attachment is designed to work on nearly any type of wheelchair (power or manual) to conveniently hold a leash.
The Leash Hook Attachment is designed for people with quadriplegia, those with very limited hand and arm movement, or for anyone who needs a convenient, hands-free way to manage their leash with their wheelchair. This special hook is designed to be used with our Wheelchair Leashes, but can be used with your own leash.*
This is the hook attachment only (leash not included). Save $5 EACH when you buy two or more!
BLD’s Leash Hook Attachment is handmade in Colorado using a specially fabricated hook mounted to a stainless steel plate that is securely fastened to a sturdy nylon webbing and Velcro wrap. The inside of the attachment is lined with gripping material to keep it in place. A separate piece of grippy material is also included to add extra holding power or diameter to the tubing if needed.
The Hook itself is designed to pivot with the gravity of the leash so the leash does not come off accidentally, but can be lifted off at any time.
Easy to install with no tools required!
We’ve made the attachment as easy to mount to the wheelchair as we can, although some clients may need a friend to help with the initial installation.
The Leash Hook Attachment wraps around a part of the wheelchair with Velcro. It can be mounted to the tubing, frame, or around the armrest of a wheelchair or mobility scooter. Velcro doubles back onto the wrap to create a strong and secure mount.
When selecting the location to attach the hook, be sure to choose a part that is structurally sound, appropriately sturdy, will not interfere with the function of the device, and within easy reach of the user. Also, be sure the chosen location will not cause damage to the wheelchair should the leash be pulled or get caught on something. If using around a wide part of the wheelchair, such as an armrest, the Extender Wrap will be required.
Ideas to consider:
Using more than one scooter/wheelchair? Consider ordering a hook for each mobility device.
Some clients prefer to use a two hook system. You may prefer to have a hook to connect the end of the leash and a second hook to hold the rings that shorten the leash. This prevents accidentally removing the whole leash when lengthening the leash.
Sizing & Measuring
Measuring:
Measure the circumference around where you want to attach the hook. Select the orientation to match the part of the wheelchair you will attach it to (vertical or horizontal).
* Whatever leash you use, please be sure it is the right length; it should be minimal and short, without excess to drag or get caught on objects or in the wheels, and must have an O-ring to drop onto the hook. Please read the safety considerations in the Safety Note tab.
Sizing:
Standard Hook Attachment fits diameter of tube/frame up to 1.5″ (3.8 cm)
Circumference of up to 5″ (12.5 cm)
With extender wrap, Hook Attachment fits diameter up to 4″ (10 cm)
Circumference of up to 10″ (25 cm)
Wheelchair Leash Sizing:
Regular half-inch wide (12.7 mm) is recommended for most dogs and people as it’s sturdy for any size dog, yet not too heavy. If you like a wider, heavier leash and larger hardware, select the wider option. In leather, the wider option is 5/8″, and in Brahma it is 3/4.”
Safety Note
Safety Considerations:
These products are intended for use with fully trained service dogs/assistance dogs/pet dogs that have excellent leash manners. We’ve designed all of our Wheelchair Leash options to manually detach from the wheelchair in the event of an emergency situation. Why? Because it’s simply a smart idea!
Only you can determine if letting go of the leash and attaching it to your wheelchair is the right choice for you and your dog.
Attached leashes (fastened to a person, wheelchair, or other mobility device) are not safe for all dogs and/or users of wheelchair/mobility devices. Please choose your equipment wisely and use responsibly.
Do not use wheelchair leashes with an untrained dog. Not for dogs that pull on the leash. Wheelchair leashes must NOT be used with dogs that lunge or are difficult to control, as this could be very dangerous. Additionally, DO NOT USE FOR PULLING A WHEELCHAIR.
Please note: If your strength or dexterity is limited, you may need assistance from a friend to install the wheelchair attachment and make the initial adjustment to the leash. Once attached and adjusted, the leash will remain at the desired length and is easy to connect to and remove from the wheelchair.

Description
The Light Assistance Harness (LAH) is a light-weight, low-impact, leather harness for close-contact communication between a service dog and their human partner.
The LAH features a semi-rigid standing handle that offers proprioception support, counterbalance, light duty forward momentum pulling and leading (guiding) that can be used while standing or walking.
The LAH follows the natural contours of the dog’s anatomy and has minimal impact on the dog’s gait and movement when properly fitted. Engineered to allow full range of motion of the dog’s shoulder joints, this harness design minimizes the load at the front of the dog’s chest. Handle pressure is well distributed around the dog’s center of mass so the dog can offer support with minimal effort. All harnesses are custom-made to order!
Every harness is handmade to order in our own Colorado workshop. Finely crafted from only the best full grain leather and durable top-quality hardware to our exacting quality standards. Turnaround time is 4-6 weeks from date measurements and details are confirmed.
As with all service dog harnesses we make, the custom-ordered LAH is backed by our famous Lifetime Warranty. Additionally, proper fit is assured by our Great Fit Guarantee (see details below).

Who is it for?
The LAH is a good choice for many people with conditions such as vertigo, balance or gait impairment, disequilibrium, neurological conditions, brain injuries, MS, chronic fatigue, etc. where light to moderate contact with a sturdy semi-rigid handle can assist with proprioception/orientation, stabilization and/or balance support.
About the Handle:
As with all BLD's assistance harnesses, the LAH is specifically designed around the handle. The harness’ body is specially designed to align the handle at the center of the dog’s center of mass (or gravity) and position all the straps in the right place. This alignment allows the dog to perform more work with minimal effort, because their mass is creating a large portion of the counterbalance or pull force needed to provide momentum and stability. This means the muscles don’t have to work so hard, thus lowering the impact of working in a harness.
Adjustable:
The breast collar and girth straps are adjustable to fine tune the fit. This allows for plenty of adjustment range should the dog’s weight or coat thickness change.
Harness Construction:
Highly specialized layers of padding serve three important functions: to protect the dog’s spine, distribute pressure lower down the dog’s sides, and to keep all hardware away from the dog’s body. It is both extremely sturdy and completely flexible to conform to the dog’s body. It is lined with smooth garment leather to allow the harness to glide with the dog’s movement.
There are four components to the LAH. Each component comes in multiple sizes for a total custom fit. The size of each component will be made to fit your dog's size and proportions.
- Balance Handle (semi-rigid is standard)
- Harness Body
- U-shaped Breast Collar (adjustable)
- Wide Girth Plate with adjustable girth straps (adjustable)
Sizing and Measuring
The Light Assistance Harness comes in a range of sizes for dogs of all shapes and sizes over 40 pounds.
Each of the LAH harness components will be made to fit your dog's measurements, and the handle will be made to your desired height.
Measuring instructions and submission form can be found here along with a video.
Instructions can also be found in the LAH Complete Information Booklet,
ABSOLUTE MINMUM SIZE REQUIREMENT: The LAH will NOT fit dogs that are smaller than 35 pound or that have a girth measurement less than 25 inches.
Please know that we cannot proceed with a harness order until we have all of the necessary measurements and details. If you plan to call for assistance or to order, it’s best to have your dog’s measurements handy!

Harness Options
Quick release latches
Quick release latches connect the girth straps to the belly plate, making the harness easy to put on and take off. The harness comes standard with our easy-to-use metal side release latches on BOTH sides of the harness. Magnetic latches are available for those with limited strength and dexterity.
Latches can be placed on both sides, or just one side of the harness:
One quick release latch allows the belly/girth to stay attached to the harness when taken off the dog. A square ring connects the girth strap to the off-side of the harness. To put the harness on the dog, it goes over their head and the belly plate connects with one simple latch.
Having quick release on BOTH sides means the belly/girth can quickly unclip from the harness, and is removed from the harness. You only need one latch to put the harness on the dog and can ignore the opposite side and leave connected. Both latches are required if your harness has the Sternum/Martingale strap between the front legs. In this case, the belly plate stays connected to the breast collar when taken off the dog. To put the harness on dog, it will first go over their head, then the belly/girth will pass between the dog’s front legs, and the straps will connect to the left and right sides of the harness.
Harness Top and Handle Brace Imprints:
The strap on the harness top can be imprinted with your choice of “Service Dog” or “Assistance Dog.” Silver is standard. The horizontal brace strap on the handle can also be imprinted.
Handle Core:
The handle is made from three layers, with leather on the outside and a reinforced core to add stiffness. Black is the standard core of the semi-rigid handle. Red and blue are available to add a pop of color. See examples in the photos. The imprints, if selected, can be made to match.
Harness Sides:
The sides have a diagonal stripe that serve several functions; it stabilizes the handle and keeps it flush to the saddle, and keeps the sides smooth to prevent the harness rubbing on your legs as you walk, The stripe can be made in your choice of styles:
- Reflective for low-light visibility
- Velcro to attach a small patch (1" x 3")
Y-Harness Option:
A sternal strap (or martingale) that goes between the dog’s front legs is also an available option. Some dogs (standard poodles, for example) do best with a strap that connects the breast collar to the girth plate. This additional strap can help keep the harness in position; it prevents the breast collar from riding up, and the belly plate from sliding back. It is designed to be removable, and can be added at a later time if needed.
Color
Harnesses are available in our standard black and London tan leather. Or further customize your harness with a specialty or limited edition color.
- Black: Solid black latigo leather is our standard offering. Because the leather is solid black all the way through it does not fade, hides the appearance of scuffs, and wears beautifully over time.
- London Tan: Gorgeous vegetable-tanned bridle leather. Color and shades will vary; each part of the harness may be a different shade. Tan leather naturally appears rustic and may show scuffs and wear over time; color may darken with use over time as a patina develops.
- Specialty leather in red, white and blue: A fine pigmented latigo leather with a firm, satin surface that is resistant to scuffs. Main body and breast collar will be made in the selected color. Handle, tabs, and other components are black.
- Limited edition colors may be available! While supplies last, we have some gorgeous colorfast bridle leather to make your harness even more bespoke. Main body and breast collar will be made in the selected color. Handle, tabs, and other components are black.
Main body and breast collar will be made in the selected color. Handle, tabs, and other small components are black.
Harness Accessories
Harness Accessories:
These small and simple accessories are designed to work with the LAH without interfering with function.
The LAH is an intentionally minimalist harness design that is not compatible with capes or pouches. Items other than these shown below, risk throwing the harness off balance or altering the pressure load on the dog.
Our “Leash Wraps” are nice ways to add badging to the LAH. These round badges are two separate patches that Velcro back-to-back so they can be wrapped around the handle brace, or the strap on top of the harness. Sold Separately.
If you select the Velcro side stripes, the harness can accommodate 1 x 3 inch (2.5 x 7.6 cm) Velcro backed patches to identify working service dogs. Sized to fit the Velcro side stripes on the LAH. Made from woven damask material, the wording and graphics on our patches are clear and legible to communicate your dog’s working status to the public. Sold Separately.
The LAH is created to be a simple single handled harness. However, it can accommodate a small simple grab handle if required. For those who insist on having a second handle this smaller option is compatible when clipped to the O-rings on the harness body. 8” overall length, 5” of leather, makes about a 3″ handle. Sold Separately.
Personal Items:
The harness can accommodate a few personal items, such as an ID badge, tags, or a clip-on light. The photo shows an ID badge clipped to the handle O-ring and tucks behind the handle and reflective strap. ID tags or a small clip-on light are shown, too.

Important Notes
Important Notes: please read this before ordering
Due to the custom nature of this special harness, returns and refunds are not available on this product. Dogs must be of appropriate age, size, fitness, and soundness for the work you would like them to perform. Dogs must be physically mature before training or performing high impact work in harness. High impact work includes pulling, guiding, counterbalance, and bracing. Harness work is not recommended until after growth plates are fused and joints and muscular system is fully developed, and a minimum age of 18 months. Consult a qualified veterinarian to assure your dog’s readiness and suitability harness work. Safety considerations: Mobility, stability, and balance assistance work are physically demanding; users assume all responsibility for the safety, health, and care of the animal and human alike. This harness is NOT to be used as a restraint or to control the animal, as a seat belt or safety restraint harness. Always supervise your dog while using this equipment. Do not leave a dog unattended with any harness. Not designed as or recommended for heavy or full-time wheelchair pulling, as this is a challenging asymmetrical task for a dog to perform. Please read and understand the harness owner's manual before use. BLD's harnesses are not for puppies or adolescent dogs. The adjustment range is limited and may not be able to accommodate a pup's rapid growth. It will cost you significantly more money if the dog outgrows the harness. Use only with handles & accessories designed and approved by BLD for this equipment.
At Bold Lead Designs, we take the health and safety of your dog seriously. We have created these guidelines based on over 15 years of experience with this specialized equipment. Our equipment is designed to allow an appropriately selected and trained service dog to reasonably assist a person with a balance, mobility impairment, or other disability that requires specialty service dog gear. BLD cannot and does not assess dogs' temperament, health or suitability to be a service dog. Fit and performance of the equipment can only be assured if the dog meets the minimum recommended guidelines, the user and trainer have reasonable expectations, and when the equipment is used responsibly for the purpose it was designed.
Age, Size and Fitness:
- Dogs should be at least 18 months of age before training or working in a harness. The dog’s growth plates must be closed AND have a fully developed musculoskeletal system before training or working in harness. This is NOT the same as "full grown" which can happen months before a dog is physically mature.
- Full physical maturity happens for most large breed dogs at 18-24 months of age, with and giant breeds need even longer to mature. Please allow your dog time to grow and mature as rushing into harness work may cause injury and shorten your dog’s working life. Additionally, if the harness is ordered too soon it will cost you significantly more money if your dog outgrows the harness.
- Dogs MUST meet the minimum weight/measurement range set forth in the sizing guide for the harness to fit and function properly.
- Service dogs should be well-exercised, physically fit, and in good body condition (lean and muscular) throughout their working life. Consider implementing an exercise and fitness routine when the dog is “off duty” to keep him/her in good shape.
- Overweight dogs should never be expected to perform load bearing tasks; additionally, obesity contributes to serious health risks and can significantly shorten a dog’s lifespan by two years.
Consult the Pros: We strongly advise all service/assistance dogs be examined by a qualified veterinarian (orthopedic/rehab specialist and/or canine sports medicine physical therapist) to determine if the dog is suitable for the demands of service dog work.
- Radiographs (x-rays) of hips, elbows, and/or other tests are recommended to rule out dysplasia or other health conditions that may limit the dog’s ability to perform physical assistance. We recommend x-rays be evaluated by a radiologist, or reviewed and certified by OFA or PennHIP.
- Understand that general practice veterinarians may not have experience with working dogs and the nuanced conditions specific to mobility dogs; for this reason a specialist is recommended whenever possible.
Likewise, harness users should consult a physician, occupational therapist and/or physical therapist to determine what medical equipment is appropriate for their disability and mobility needs. BLD harnesses are not intended to serve as, or to replace, a durable medical device such as a cane, walker, or crutch. Please understand that one should never lean on a dog to stay upright. Users should read, understand, and follow all instructions and information provided in the harness information and owner's manual before using the equipment. Improper use could put the dog and human at risk for injury. Additional Resources: To learn more about mobility dogs that provide balance and stability assistance, see recommendations developed by experts in the industry, and find links to research and other information, check out Mobility Dog Resource Group at mobilitydogresources.com.
In your dog’s best interest, please understand that BLD may decline or cancel an order if we believe a harness could be harmful to the dog because of age, size, or unreasonable expectations.

It is lightweight, sturdy, and very comfortable.
Every harness is custom made by hand in our own Colorado workshop. Crafting each harness to order is how we provide the right fit for the dog while meeting each user’s individual needs.
Proper fit is assured by our Great Fit Guarantee.

(Don't worry about the other components, we will build the harness based on the dog's measurements)
ABSOLUTE MINMUM SIZE REQUIREMENT: This harness will NOT fit dogs that are smaller than the minimum recommended 45 pounds, 21inches tall, or with a girth size less than 28 inches.
Leather Color
Standard Colors:
-
Black: Solid black latigo leather is our standard offering. Because the leather is solid black all the way through it does not fade, hides the appearance of scuffs, and wears beautifully over time.
-
London Tan: Gorgeous vegetable-tanned bridle leather. Color and shades will vary; each part of the harness may be a different shade. Tan leather naturally appears rustic and may show scuffs and wear. Over time the leather develops a unique and beautiful patina that becomes a darker as it ages.
Specialty and limited edition colors:
- Specialty leather in red, white and blue: A fine pigmented latigo leather with a firm, satin surface that is resistant to scuffs. Main body and breast collar will be made in the selected color. Handle, tabs, and other components are black.
- Limited edition colors may be available! While supplies last, we have some gorgeous colorfast bridle leather to make your harness even more bespoke. Main body and breast collar will be made in the selected color. Handle, tabs, and other components are black.
The main body and breastplate will be made in your chosen color. The handle, straps, and smaller parts will be black.
Handle Options The MSH harness has a rigid metal support handle made from lightweight, high-grade aluminum.
These handles are designed with a low center of gravity to distribute pressure around the dog’s core. Metal support bars are permanently mounted to the harness saddle and will not loosen over time. These support bars also feature support D-rings on each side which can be used for attaching other handle styles if needed.
The MSH can have a second handle made from leather to add more functionality to the harness. All are made to your desired height/length.
Leather Handle Options:
Clip-on handle: Minimal, low profile option clips onto heavy-duty d-rings toward the top of the harness saddle. Makes a good second handle for occasional tasks like getting up from a seated position, or for occasional momentum assistance. Can be made to any length/height. Available as a Short Grab Handle sized so it’s just enough to get ahold of for the shortest handle possible (about 2.5 inches)
Support Pull Handle - highly recommended! Designed for heavier momentum and pulling needs. Provides optimal pulling pressure distribution. Handle attaches to d-rings with spring snap clips. “Mouse ear” loops keep the handle in position at a slight angle back. This handle drops a bit when you let go of it, has a looser feel than A or B, but is best for those who need moderate gait stabilization, a sturdy momentum pull, and guiding/leading. - Most popular as a second handle in the semi-rigid style!
All leather handles that are 4.5" or higher will have a horizontal brace strap to stabilize the U-shape. These can be imprinted with "ASSISTANCE DOG" OR "SERVICE DOG" if desired.
Example of imprinted brace straps and semi-rigid handles with color cores:
Also available: Leather Guide Handle
Contact us if you'd like to order one. This is an older handle style and is not typically recommended. The Support Pull handle is the best choice for most people, as it is sturdier and offers more support and directional feedback than the Leather Guide handle.
More Customization
The BAH is made with easy to use quick release latches on one side of the harness, and adjustment buckles on the other side. To put the harness on your dog, you only need to use two latches!
Choose Latch Option for Girth and Belly Straps:
- Quick-Release Buckles (Default standard option): All metal buckles are easy to operate. Spring-loaded side release style requires little pressure to open.
- One-Hand latch operation ($): D-rings placed near the quick-release make it easier to grasp the straps and fasten with one hand.
- Magnetic Latches ($): These special latches are easy to use and are secure. Ideal for those with very limited strength and dexterity and allows for one-handed operation. The magnets self-align and hook closed when fastening the straps and easily release by pulling the red tabs. These latches include D-rings for easy grasp when fastening the straps on your dog.

The BLD Balance Assistance Harness (BAH):
This is not your average service dog harness!
BLD’s specialty service dog harness is designed to provide balance and stability support for people with balance or mobility impairments, as well as for anyone needing good communication and contact with their service dog. We have designed this harness with the dog’s physical structure and movement in mind, and then added features to make it user-friendly and truly accessible. This is the most stable, ergonomic, and functional service dog harness available!
The Balance Assistance Harness can
- assist balance by counterbalance or pulling
- offers stabilization while standing or walking
- help maintain a regular gait
- provide forward momentum pulling, leading/guiding
- assist with getting up from a seated position
Guided by a veterinary orthopedic surgeon, canine sports medicine experts, and canine physical therapists, BLD’s unique harness design allows the dog to move, breathe, and work with minimal impact from the equipment. Weight and pressure are properly distributed across the dog’s body for optimal performance of physical assistance tasks. Similar to a horse saddle, this harness sits just behind the withers (or shoulders), around the dog’s center of gravity. When fitted properly, this harness does not wobble, shift, pinch, or rub the dog. It is lightweight, sturdy, and very comfortable.
Every harness is custom made by hand in our own Colorado workshop. Crafting each harness to order is how we are able to provide the right fit for the dog while meeting the user’s individual needs.
Proper fit is assured by our Great Fit Guarantee.
Turnaround Time up to 10 weeks
NOTE: as of 7/18/2026 we cannot guarantee a turnaround time. We are working through a massive rush of orders with limited staffing and are waiting on specialty components to be delivered. Orders will be completed as soon as we are able, timeframe may be as late as September, 2026. Thank you for your understanding
Harness Features
Harness Features
- Harnesses are custom made to fit your dog’s measurements and conform to your dog’s anatomy
- Handle and harness are designed to properly distribute pressure around the dog’s core with minimal impact on the dog’s gait and range of motion
- Flexes with movement yet does not shift or wobble when fitted properly
- Quick-Release buckles make it easy to put on and take off the dog—simply click together two easy-to-use latches; harness remains adjusted when removed
- All straps have several inches of adjustment to fine-tune the fit
- Saddle is made with special padding to offload pressure from the dog's back and prevent strain on the spine
- Sheepskin lining on saddle, breastplate, girth, and belly straps provide proper cushion to prevent pinching or rubbing, as well as optimal structural support for the function of the harness
- D-rings for attaching accessories, such as a cape, pouch, ID badges, pulling strap, etc.
- Intended for dogs that are 60 pounds or larger (27 kg)
Designed to last for decades
This harness has been designed with interchangeable straps for the greatest flexibility; perfect for adapting a harness to fit a new dog or user. You may order replacement parts any time you need them. Support handles are replaceable if the harness is built to accommodate the height you need. In fact, we regularly help customers re-fit harnesses onto 3rd and 4th successor dogs (when the dogs fit the same size saddle). See replacement parts here.
NOTE: This harness does NOT offer bracing; leather assistance handle is lower impact and generally safer for the dog than a rigid metal handle. For bracing needs, see our Mobility Support Harness.

Sizing
BAH Harness size:
Standard BAH - For most dogs 45-110 pounds, with a girth size of 28-36 inches that are 21 inches or taller measured at the withers. Best choice for most retrievers, German Shepherd Dogs and Belgians, smaller Great Pyrenees, and larger standard poodles and doodles.
Extra Large BAH - For most dogs 105-170 pounds, with a girth size of 34-42 inches that are 26″ or taller. Best choice for most Newfoundland, large Great Pyrenees, Larger Bernese mountain dogs, larger rottweilers, smaller Great Danes, etc.
Giant BAH - For dogs that meet or exceed a minimum of 50 pounds, a girth of 40 and 12 inch width. Best choice for larger Great Danes, Mastiffs, etc.
Need help with sizing? Don’t hesitate to ask! Contact us. We’ll take a look at your dog’s measurements to be sure you get the right size (before or after you place your order).
The below chart can help you determine the harness size you need. Weight and girth measurement are the most important.
(Don't worry about the other components, we will build the harness based on the dog's measurements)
Leather Color
Standard Colors:
-
Black: Solid black latigo leather is our standard offering. Because the leather is solid black all the way through it does not fade, hides the appearance of scuffs, and wears beautifully over time.
-
London Tan: Gorgeous vegetable-tanned bridle leather, the same used for fine horse tack. Overtime the leather develops a unique and beautiful patina that becomes a darker as it ages. Color and shades will vary; each part of the harness may be a different shade. Tan leather naturally appears rustic and may show scuffs and wear.
Handle Options
The BAH can have your choice of one or two leather handles. All are made to your desired height/length. You can have them made at different sizes for different tasks.
All leather handles that are 4.5" or higher will have a horizontal brace strap to stabilize the U-shape. These can be imprinted with "ASSISTANCE DOG" OR "SERVICE DOG" if desired.
Balance Handle (vertical) - most popular in semi-rigid style
The Balance Handle is positioned vertically on the harness. It is stabilized to provide excellent feedback and communication with your dog for counterbalance, stability and proprioception while walking or standing. Mounts low on the harness saddle with quick-release buckles, and is kept upright with heavy-duty O-rings. Folds flat by unclipping the quick-release buckles and pivoting back.
Available flexible or semi-rigid for increased sturdiness and feedback. Flexible handles soften over time and slump when not in use. Semi-Rigid handles are designed to hold their form and stand upright, making it accessible for grasping without bending over. (Not a brace handle–it will flex with direct pressure to diffuse movement and minimize torque on the dog.) You may also choose a handle core color for semi-rigid handles to add a pop of fun contrast!
Clip-on handle
Minimal, low profile option clips onto heavy-duty d-rings toward the top of the harness saddle. Makes a good second handle for occasional tasks like getting up from a seated position, or for occasional momentum assistance. Can be made to any length/height. Also available as a Short Grab Handle sized so it’s just enough to get ahold of for the shortest handle possible (about 2.5 inches)
Support Pull Handle - Most popular as a second handle in the semi-rigid style!
The Support Pull Handle is designed for heavier momentum and pulling needs. Provides optimal pulling pressure distribution. Handle attaches to d-rings with spring snap clips. “Mouse ear” loops keep the handle in position at a slight angle back. This handle drops a bit when you let go of it, and has a looser feel than the Balance Handle but is best for those who need moderate gait stabilization, a sturdy momentum pull, and guiding/leading. Available flexible or semi-rigid for increased sturdiness and feedback. You may also choose a handle core color for semi-rigid handles to add a pop of fun contrast!

Important Notes
Important Notes: please read this before ordering
Due to the custom nature of this special harness, returns and refunds are not available on this product.
At Bold Lead Designs, we take the health and safety of your dog seriously. We have created these guidelines based on over 15 years of experience with this specialized equipment.
Dogs must be physically mature and of appropriate size, fitness and soundness for the work you would like them to perform. Mobility, stability, and balance assistance work are physically demanding. A service dog should always be in prime physical condition to remain healthy.
Age, Size and Fitness:
Dogs should be at least 18 months of age before beginning harness work. The dog’s growth plates must be closed before starting to train a dog for harness work. This happens for most large breed dogs at 18-24 months of age and giant breeds need even longer to mature. Please allow your dog time to grow and mature as rushing into harness work may cause injury and shorten your dog’s working life. Additionally, if the harness is ordered too soon it will cost you significantly more money if your dog outgrows the harness.
Dogs MUST be in our recommended weight/measurement range set forth in the sizing guide for the harness to fit and function properly.
We want to see properly exercised, fit, lean, muscular dogs! Overweight dogs should never be expected to perform load bearing tasks; additionally, obesity contributes to serious health risks and can significantly shorten a dog’s lifespan. Consider implementing an exercise and fitness routine when the dog is “off duty” to keep him/her in good shape.
Consult the Pros:
Consulting a qualified veterinarian (orthopedic specialist or canine sports medicine physical therapist) is highly recommended for all service/assistance dogs that perform physical tasks. Radiographs (x-rays) or other tests may be recommended by the vet and are required by most service dog training organizations to determine if the dog is suitable for the demands of service dog work.
Harness users should consult a physician and physical therapist to determine what medical equipment is appropriate for their mobility needs. BLD harnesses are not intended to serve as, or to replace, a durable medical device such as a cane, walker, or crutch. Please understand that one should never lean on a dog to stay upright. Rigid metal handles must not be pushed or pulled on while the dog is in motion. Such use is not how the harness is intended to be used and could put the dog at risk for injury.
——————————
Fit and performance of the equipment can only be assured if the dog meets the minimum recommended standards, the user and trainer have reasonable expectations, and when the equipment is used responsibly for the purpose it was designed.
Our equipment is designed to allow an appropriately selected and trained service dog to reasonably assist a person with a balance, mobility impairment, or other disability that requires specialty service dog gear. BLD cannot assess a dog’s suitability or appropriateness. Users assume all responsibility for the safety, health, and care of the animal and human alike.
In your dog’s best interest, please understand that BLD may decline an order if we believe a harness could be harmful to the dog because of age, size, or unreasonable expectations.

BLD’s wide, ergonomically shaped belly plate is specifically engineered to distribute nearly all leash or handle pressure under the dog’s chest to minimize, if not eliminate, impact on the dog’s neck and shoulders. With a leash attached to the top of the harness (on the dog’s back), when the dog pulls into the harness the force is directed under the prosternum and ribs to support the dog’s weight from the core of their body. This means the harness can be used for control/restraint while training, to lift/support the dog’s front end, tracking, nose work, or other sports.
When a leash is attached to the front of the harness (on the dog’s chest), the EWH is a humane and effective no-pull harness that can be used to direct the dog’s movement back to you to prevent leash pulling or to guide the dog’s movement.
The EWH fits loosely on the dog’s body. If you’re looking for a snug, stable, and supportive service dog harness, please see our Balance Assistance or Mobility Support Harnesses.
For Service Dogs:
This is BLD’s ONLY harness for both personal assistance and attaching a leash! This one harness can replace your nylon no-pull harness and service dog vest while offering simple handle options for your assistance needs. As with all BLD harnesses, this one is durable and designed for a lifetime of reliable use.
-
Optional Simple Handle (approx. 3”) offers assistance for the person including:
- Counter-balance
- Momentum pull
- Getting up from a seated position
- Handle is low-profile and lays down on the dog’s back
- Optional skirt with Velcro panel is perfect for attaching your service dog patches
- A Clip-On Bridge Handle can be added for additional functionality (D-Rings on top are required)
As with all BLD harnesses, the EWH is specifically designed around the handle. The EWH will accommodate ONLY the handle options available for this harness.

Select the size based on your dog’s weight and girth measurement. If your dog’s weight and measurements fall into more than one option, size down for a lighter harness or size up for a heavier, wider harness. Important Notes
Dogs must be physically mature and of appropriate size, fitness and soundness for the work you would like them to perform. This means, your dog must be fully mature before using any handles on the harness.
The EWH can serve as a regular walking harness and/or service dog harness on adolescent dogs. However, handles should not be used until the dog is fully mature and ready for advanced task work.
Not recommended for growing puppies. Due to the substantial nature of this harness, dogs should be 18 months or older. Additionally, the adjustment range is limited and may not be able to accommodate a pup’s rapid growth.
Dogs must be physically mature before training for harness work or performing high impact work, including pulling, until after growth plates are fused and joints are mature. Consult a qualified veterinarian to assure your dog’s suitability for harness work.
Safety considerations: this harness is NOT to be used as a safety restraint. It is not crash test rated or intended as a seat belt harness, or a tie-out. Always supervise your dog while using this equipment, do not leave a dog unattended with any harness. Dogs should be physically mature to perform any load-bearing or pulling work. Not designed as or recommended for heavy or full-time wheelchair pulling, as this is a challenging asymmetrical task for a dog to perform.
Use only with handles & accessories designed and approved by BLD for this equipment.
Important Notes regarding service dogs that perform mobility assistance: please read this before ordering

A simple, short, clip-on handle
We’ve created this little clip-on handle for those that would like a simple grab handle added to the BAH, MSH, or LAH.
Most commonly used for pulling up from a seated position, or for occasional wheelchair pulling. 8″ overall length, with 5″ of triple-layered leather, creates approximately a 2-3″ handle.
(Will not fit BLD’s everyday working harness, the clips are too small for the D-rings.)
Made from layered, 5/8″ wide leather and stainless steel snaps just like BLD’s other leather harness handles. This grab handle can be used anytime you need the dog to pull with a quick tug, such as for climbing stairs, getting up from a seated position, and even pulling a wheelchair on occasion.
Stainless steel snaps are on each end and clip to the accessory D-rings on the BAH and MSH, or onto the top O-rings on the BAH and LAH.
Designed to fit only the indicated harnesses by Bold Lead Designs. Accessory strap only. Harness not included.
You're in the right place to order a new custom leather handle for your BLD harness!
BLD's leather handles and fit our Balance Assistance Harness, Mobility Support Harness, and the Light Assistance Harness 2.0* made in 2024 or later.
Attachment Style: Available with either a quick release latch or spring snap clip, depending on which handle you need to fit your harness.
The Semi-Rigid Handles are now standard! These handles are reinforced to make them stiffer to hold their shape and provide increased feedback. Semi-Rigid are recommended for most users. Made to measure in any height/length.

Thank you for your understanding.
Information We’ll Need:
- We will need to know the harness style and saddle size you have.
- The type of handle desired. Your harness must be able to accommodate the handle. If in doubt, contact us and we’re happy to help!
- Your dog’s width (width can affect the height of the finished handle).
- Tell us the handle HEIGHT/LENGTH you need (from top of saddle to handle grip). Please see the measuring instructions in the above PDF.
- Alternatively if you know what works best for your handle you may tell us the actual overall length (again, please see the measuring instructions).
- If you have ordered a harness from us, we will reference your original order (please let us know if the name on the original order is different). If your harness is not in our files we may ask for a photo of your harness so we can be sure to get all the details right for you! (We’ve made a few changes to hardware and assembly over the years.)
NOTES: BLD handles are made to fit BLD harnesses ONLY and are not compatible with other brands.
*If you have an LAH made before 2020, please contact us to order a new handle; old-style LAH handles are 3/4" wide. These narrower handles and are not compatible. Pricing is the same.

Handle Height Options
MSH Rigid Metal Support Handle height:
Height is the distance between the top of the harness saddle and the top of the handlebar. Our handles are adjustable so you can easily get the best height for you. Support Handle adjustment range is approximate as exact dimensions depend on the harness size and dog’s width. Width of the handle will match your dog’s actual width.
- 2-4” *Select this size if your dog’s withers are equal to or higher than your wrist measurement
- 3-6”
- 5-8.5”
- 9-11” TALL *Harness saddle MUST be made to accommodate this size: Support Bars on the harness saddle must be 1/4″ thick.
*The TALL size handle applies more torque and pressure to dog than shorter handles. Not recommended for most users or for any dog smaller than our recommended size. Consider the BAH if tall handle is required.
Handle Grip Options
Handle Grip:
- Standard straight handlebar (straight across)
- Ergonomic grip (z-shaped for more natural hand and arm position, allows your arm to stay closer to your body for comfort), indicate left or right hand
