Swivel Shackle Snap
BLD was the FIRST dog leash maker to offer a swivel shackle snap! We had these quick-release panic snap is designed and custom-fabricated to offer a safe swivel snap option for working K-9s and dog sports, it releases in an instant by pulling the tab.
This snap will hold tight when you need it the most, yet can be instantly released under load. Excellent for Shuzhund, police work, tracking, hunting, lure coursing, or other situations requiring instant release, even when the dog is pulling hard on the leash.
This snap is designed and made exclusively for BLD! Inspired by marine hardware, we’ve custom fabricated a swivel version with working dogs in mind. This thing is designed to hold boat rigging–it’s super strong! It’s no match for even the strongest, burliest dogs that somehow manage to wrangle themselves out of regular leash hardware. Made from marine grade stainless steel, with a pull-tab to activate the release mechanism.
Hardware only: If you are purchasing just the snap, please select “hardware only.” Receive our pro discount when you order 6-packs.
Add to my leash order: Modify a new leash order by selecting this option. The snap will replace the standard hardware on the “dog end” of the leash; we'll use brass for any other hardware on the leash. This add-on price is only valid when REPLACING another piece of hardware.

Size and Other Info
Swivel Shackle Snap is approx. 2 3/4″ long (7 cm). It’s remarkably light and elegant for it’s strength and reliability. Fits 3/4″ and 1″ wide leather or webbing.
There is also a choice for the material used for the pull-tab. We recommend a matching leather pull tab on leather leashes, and a nifty black plastic pull tab (resembling a zipper pull) on Brahma Leads.
This snap is easy to release, but does require quite a strong pull on the tab at a specific angle. This is to prevent it releasing by accident (such as if the dog is running through brush). A note to our disabled friends: this requires good dexterity to operate.
Caution! The leash will snap back once released if there is pressure on the leash. Always use the pull tab to release the shackle snap; using the O-ring alone may result in injury. Keep well away from face. Before using in the field, we strongly suggest some practice to familiarize yourself with the motion required and the way the shackle releases.

Do you have a dog who mysteriously is able to shake loose of a regular leash snap? This is the solution!
Fabricated exclusively for our workshop, these beautiful solid brass leash snaps have a secure locking mechanism.
Unlike spring gate dog leash hardware (the kind where the gate swings in), this one will not pop off the dog’s collar/harness when twisted. Furthermore, unlike traditional bolt snaps (the kind where the lever pulls down to open the gate), it will not accidentally release if caught on brush, nor will it be shaken loose when used properly.

How to use:
- Spin the lock to open (clockwise) and release the gate
- Snap onto the dog’s collar or harness
- Spin the lock closed (counterclockwise) to secure the gate
- Always spin the lock completely closed when in use on the dog’s collar or harness to ensure the snap is locked*
*Caution! Do not use the snap in the “open” unlocked position. This snap must be fully locked closed when in use. Failure to spin the gate lock closed may cause the hook to bend out of alignment and fail. The lock sheath reinforces the hook part of the snap to make it secure. BLD’s leash warranty assumes proper use of this snap.

#3 Length and Human-End
#3 Length and Human-End
Length of Leash
- Select the length range, then define the specific length you'd like in the notes
- Overall length is measured from dog-end to handle-end (tip to tip)
- Functional length is how we measure multi-functional leashes when configured
Choose Handle-End Style
How would you like the handle for human-end of the leash to be made?
- Regular Loop Handle
- Bolt snap at end (no handle)
- Regular handle loop with a bolt snap (loose on the handle)
- Open handle (bolt snap, clips to ring 18″ from end) same as our multi-functional leashes
- Something else (describe in notes)
#4 Tell us What You'd Like
#4 Tell us what you'd like
Any feature you've seen on our leash designs is an option! Write-in the features you'd like to see on your full-custom designed leash.
-
Tell us what you need
- Would you like a multifunctional style with fixed O-rings to clip the handle-end?
- How about extenders? Swivels? Detachments? Other special features?
- All in one multi-dog leash?
- Special assembly requests?
- Whatever you like!
-
Quick Grab handle
- can be at the dog-end just above the leash snap, or a different location on the leash measured from the dog end
- middle of handle will be at specified measurement
- grab handle loops within 18" of the leash snap will be made at the dog-end
-
Hands-free options
- Wear over your shoulder, like a sash - an open handle style with a fixed O-ring are best for this style
- Around the waist, like a belt - it can be adjustable or a specific size
- Most hands-free options utilize a bolt snap at the handle-end that clips to an O-ring to form the cross-body loop. A fixed length loop for over-the-shoulder is possible, too.
Measuring for features
Measure the distance starting at the dog-end of the leash. Then, you can specify the location of features either measuring from the dog-end, or the distance between the features.
How to measure:
- Use an old leash or rope to try out the configurations you'd like.
- Mark locations for rings, etc. with tape (Scotch tape or masking tape works great)
- Use a measuring tape to measure the distance
For example, perhaps you want to wear the leash hands free, and have enough leash so your dog can lay down, THEN shorten the leash when they stand up.
- measure the length of the cross-body segment; generally people like the connection to the dog-end segment to start at their hip
- determine length for the dog's segment - measure from your body to the dog's collar
- shorten the dog dog end to the desired position, then measure again to the dog's collar
#5 How will you use your leash?
Finally, tell us more about you and your dog and how you plan to use the leash.
Help us understand the purpose of the request will help us determine the best way to make your leash. If you're looking for a special leash for a specific activity, let us know!
Modify vs. Full-Custom
Do you really need a full-custom leash?
It may be simpler and less expensive to modify a BLD leash design.
If you like one of our existing leash designs and only need minor changes to make it just right for you, feel free to call or email us to discuss. We're here for you and are happy to assist finding the best option to get you what you need.
For example, if you love the 8-Way, but need it to be 8 inches longer on the middle section, and want to change the leash snap hardware, that can be done as a modification to the 8-Way.
